Use of Sick time, Family time and Vacation days

As mentioned in our previous updates, the Union’s position from the start of the COVID-19 crisis is that no member should be negatively affected by the current circumstances we find ourselves in, either through a loss of salary or use of sick time, family time or vacation days.

Many members have been fortunate that they have been able to work from home from the start of this pandemic. Others have not been affected by the school and daycare closures or have been able to remain at work without having to use sick time.

But, we recognize that this has not been the case for all of our members. Some of you have told us that you have had to use your sick time, family time or vacation days during this difficult time. We’ve heard from many members that when the schools and daycares closed you were given no choice but to use your sick time, family time or vacation days because you were either unable or not permitted to work from home, or have found it difficult to balance childcare with your work responsibilities.

We know that a majority of members are now able to work from home and no longer have to use their sick time, family time or vacation days. Despite this, we are still hearing from many of you , some of you still at home, that you have had to use up a considerable amount of your sick time, family time and/or vacation days.

For example, positions like Healthcare, the Distribution Centre (mailroom), Corporate Records and File Access are not able to work from home and have not had the ability to work in another department that allows work from home.

As the Union moves forward to ensure all members are treated equally and fairly, we require some information from our members who have had to use their sick time, family time and/or vacation days during this pandemic.

Please provide us with the following information:

  1. How much sick time, family time or vacation days have your had to use due to being unable to work from home?
  2. Are you at home and continue to use sick time, family time or vacation days?
  3. How many days do you have remaining in your sick day bank?

This request also applies to those of you who are able to work partly from home, but are still using sick time, family time or vacation days to make up for a portion of your hours worked.

Please know that your Union continues to advocate for you throughout this difficult time and we are doing everything we can to ensure fairness for all members.
